Storytelling As a Leadership Tool
April 13, 2026Three Keys to Growing as a Leader
Have you ever had a moment when you felt there might be a cap on your leadership potential? In John Maxwell’s book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, he states that our leadership ability serves as a lid to our success. In this post, we will explore how we can continuously grow as leaders and lift that lid.
Before we dive in, let me illustrate this leadership lid that could limit us. Picture this: if your leadership ability is a level five, you’ll struggle to attract anyone with a higher capability than a four. On the other hand if it is an eight you will attract as high as level seven leaders. We need to raise our lid. So, how can we do it? Here are a few practical strategies.
Embrace Books
Books are powerful tools for growth. When I read, I seek one of two outcomes: clarification or challenge. Some books clarify concepts I already understand, while others challenge my perspectives, pushing me to think differently. Whether you prefer traditional reading or audiobooks, enriching your knowledge in this way will stretch your leadership capacity.
Surround Yourself with People Who Challenge You
Engaging with people who think differently is vital to expanding your leadership horizons. I often lead workshops using John Maxwell’s resources, where leaders come together and process ideas. This collaborative environment fosters mutual learning, as they stretch each other’s thinking. Consider seeking out a thinking partner or a coach—someone who can help you reflect and think creatively about your leadership journey. After all, it’s challenging to see outside your own frame of reference.
Seek Out New Experiences
Experiences can be transformative. Attending conferences or engaging in new activities can introduce you to different mindsets and challenge your status quo. Personally, I make it a point to attend conferences twice a year, immersing myself in environments that provoke new ideas and insights.
I have heard of a leader who learned to fly for his own mental well-being. Another person picked up drumming. These seemingly unrelated experiences pushed them out of their comfort zones and catalyzed significant personal growth. What new experience might stretch you?
What could you do to put this into action: dive into a new book, connect with a thought-provoking individual, or embrace a fresh experience. Perhaps you could give your time to lead a group of volunteers. This could become an invaluable learning opportunity.
As you ponder these strategies, think about what excites you. Each of these avenues can not only elevate your leadership lid but also help others flourish in their journeys.
