If you are reading this you probably are in a situation where you have to speak in front of others.  Public speaking is often cited as the number one fear for many, even surpassing the fear of death. As a leader, effective communication is one of the four key pillars of leadership, which I discuss in my comprehensive digital program. Whether you’re addressing a large audience or presenting to a small group, the ability to communicate effectively is critical for successful leadership.

Here are a few actionable strategies to enhance your public speaking abilities:

Practice Out Loud

This principle was driven home from my speaking mentor Roddy Galbraith. The importance of practice cannot be overstated. It can be awkward at first—trust me, the first time I spoke to a camera, I felt ridiculous. However, speaking out loud as if you’re addressing a live audience will boost your confidence. Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself to hear how you sound. Listening to your delivery from another perspective can provide invaluable feedback and help you refine your message for maximum impact.

Make a Plan

You might be a natural communicator, but taking the time to plan your speech can lead to significantly better results. I learned this lesson the hard way. A college professor once told me I could greatly improve my communication if I took the time to prepare. It took years for me to embrace this advice, but now, I understand that whether you have a short or lengthy speech, time invested in planning is time well spent. As one U.S. president famously noted, the shorter the speech, the more time he needed to prepare.

Seek Training

Don’t hesitate to seek help! Join a speaking club, like Toastmasters, or work with a speaking coach. I’ve utilized resources from the Maxwell Leadership Organization to aid others in developing their public speaking skills. The right training can significantly enhance your communication abilities.

Emphasize Simplicity

John Maxwell emphasizes the importance of simplicity in communication. When your message is clear and straightforward, it resonates better with your audience. Whether conveying ideas or selling a product, simplicity is key to ensuring your audience grasps your message effectively.

Connect with People

Finally, prioritize building genuine connections. As a leader, the effectiveness of your goals hinges on how well you relate to others. People have lives and challenges of their own—taking the time to connect on a personal level shows you care. When your team knows you value them as individuals, they’ll be far more receptive to your ideas and leadership.
