Leadership Tug-o-War
October 27, 2025Resilience as a Leader
Life can be undeniably challenging. For those of us in leadership roles, fostering resilience in our teams is not just beneficial; it’s essential. For many years I was a strength and conditioning coach working with athletes. During those years I learned that resilience—the ability to endure and rise above adversity—is a crucial trait for success. It’s a skill that often must be cultivated in a supportive environment. Here are some ideas on how to cultivate resilience on your team.
Empathize, But Don’t Enable
To nurture resilience in your team, practice empathy without enabling. Acknowledge the struggles your team members are facing, but don’t allow excuses to fester. Create a safe space for your team to express their feelings in a productive manner. Consider implementing a “24-hour rule.” After a result occurs, especially on a major initiative, if something doesn’t go as planned, give yourself and your team 24 hours to be disappointed or celebrate successes. After that window closes, it’s time to move forward. This approach not only builds resilience but also fosters a community where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth.
Test Your Thinking
Another important aspect of resilience is cultivating critical thinking skills. When adversity strikes, encourage your team to assess their thoughts. Are their evaluations based on facts, or are they creating false stories? Guide team members to test their thoughts against reality, and you will empower them to filter out negativity and build a more constructive mindset. This practice will not only make individuals more resilient but also enhance team effectiveness.
Foster a Culture of Learning
A healthy organizational culture views mistakes as an opportunity to learn. Establish systems where team members can debrief after projects, whether they succeed or fail. This environment helps both internal and external processors articulate thoughts and feelings. This system encourages discussions to learn from failures. This way, when projects don’t go as intended, the team knows they can come together, share insights, and develop new strategies for future initiatives. Promoting a culture that normalizes learning from mistakes will ultimately lead to greater resilience within your team.
Stretch to Grow
Just as physical muscles need to stretch and endure discomfort to grow, so do our mental and emotional muscles. Building resilience involves stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing the discomfort that comes with growth. Challenge yourself and your team to pursue new experiences regularly. It’s crucial to keep stretching—whether it’s taking on new responsibilities, seeking additional training, or engaging in unfamiliar tasks. As each individual stretches out of their comfort zone it will expand the impact the team can make.
As you look at these areas, which one do you need to grow in? As with any change, it takes time and you will not see results immediately. Make small adjustments each day and over time you will grow in your resilience as a leader. Need help thinking into how to be more resilient or exploring areas for growth?
