Growing as a Leader
April 19, 2026Storytelling As a Leadership Tool
If you are a movie watcher then I am sure you have had the experience where a movie grabs you right at the beginning and keeps you hooked the entire time. Recently I watched a movie that hooked me from the beginning and had me glued to my seat and the screen for the next two hours. What created that?
The Story. Just as a movie’s story hooks us so can stories draw in and inspire those you lead. Leadership is about inspiration and stories are a powerful way to inspire your team. The way we tell stories can deeply engage and motivate those around us. In this blog I’m going to explain the power of stories and provide a practical tip to help you find stories so you can become an even more inspiring leader.
Paint the Picture
One of the most profound impacts of storytelling is its ability to paint vivid images in your audience’s mind. Instead of simply stating objectives like, “We will grow our revenue by 10%,” consider weaving a narrative. For example, “By the end of this year, we will 10x our revenues! Picture transforming countless lives through our products and services, leading to tangible change.” The first example is mere data; the second invites your audience to visualize a brighter future. It allows them to see themselves as part of the journey, enriching their connection to your leadership.
Create Connections
Stories foster connections. Think about your favorite movie—what draws you back time and time again? For me, it’s Braveheart and The Lord of the Rings. The tales of William Wallace and Frodo Baggins resonate because they depict the struggles and triumphs that mirror our own experiences. As a leader, your stories can evoke similar emotions and connections with your team. Share narratives that reflect your organization’s journey, the challenges faced, and the successes achieved. When your team sees themselves in these stories, they become more invested in the collective vision.
Inspire Transformation
Stories are inherently inspiring. They convey transformations that evoke emotions and affirmation. Think of testimonials you receive—those stories illustrate the impact of your product or service. Video testimonials, in particular, bring this to life even more effectively. They establish credibility and allow your team to visualize the difference they’re making in people’s lives. As a leader, harness these testimonials to inspire your team and align them with a deeper purpose.
Collecting Stories: A Practical Tip
So, how do you gather these impactful stories? They’re all around you, waiting to be utilized. When I realized the importance of storytelling, I started documenting experiences in a note on my phone. Any encounter—no matter how mundane—could become a powerful narrative one day. I even maintain an Excel file of compelling stories to reference when needed. Create your own system, whether it’s digital or paper-based, and start collecting the stories. You never know when one of them will be a powerful tool to inspire your team.
Which of these areas of storytelling could you grow in over the weeks ahead? Take the time to notice the stories around you, whether personal experiences, helpful anecdotes, or testimonials from others. Each story offers a chance to connect and inspire those you lead.
