Last week we discussed the strong and dominant style. This week let’s explore having a difficult conversation with someone with an outgoing, strong, and fun personality. As a leader, it’s essential to communicate effectively with all types of personalities, including the influential (I) personality type. These individuals are often confident, persuasive, and enthusiastic, but they can also be resistant to criticism and difficult to approach when it comes to addressing sensitive topics.
Handling difficult conversations with an I personality requires finesse, tact, and empathy. Here’s how you can navigate these conversations with grace and get your point across without avoiding the candid truth.
Understand their communication style
The first step in having a difficult conversation with an I personality is to understand their communication style. These individuals thrive on positivity, recognition, and validation. They respond well to praise and encouragement, but can quickly shut down in the face of criticism or negativity. When preparing for the conversation, frame your points in a positive and constructive manner. Focus on how the individual’s strengths can be leveraged to address the issue at hand.Use active listening
People with this style value having their ideas heard. During the conversation, practice active listening to demonstrate empathy and understanding. Allow the individual to express themselves without interruption and show genuine interest in their perspective. Reflect back on what you hear to ensure you fully understand their point of view. This helps build rapport and trust, making it easier to broach difficult topics without causing defensiveness or resistance.Maintain a positive and uplifting tone
One of the greatest concerns of a person with this personal style is being rejected. Because of this, maintain a positive and uplifting tone to keep the individual engaged and receptive. Emphasize their strengths, acknowledge their contributions, and express confidence in their ability to overcome the challenge. By framing the conversation in a positive light, you can motivate the influential individual to take ownership of the issue and work towards improvement.Follow up and provide feedback
Regardless of personality style, after the conversation, follow up with the individual to provide ongoing feedback and support. Regularly monitoring their progress and providing guidance will ensure changes are last. Recognize and celebrate efforts and improvements, reinforce the positive impact of the conversation and their commitment to growth.Having difficult conversations with an influential personality requires a blend of empathy and positivity. By implementing these strategies you can navigate these conversations effectively and help the individual thrive. These conversations are not enjoyable, but in the long run they will help keep you and the team member focused and the team growing toward their goals.
