Leading Remotely
November 9, 2025Setting Vision as A Leader
When we drive we can look out of the windshield to what is ahead or we can constantly look at the rearview mirror. We need to be aware of what is behind us, but most of our time we focus on what is in front of us. A good driver is looking more than just at the car right in front, but anticipating what could happen. This type of looking around is one of the most crucial aspects of effective leadership: the ability to see further than others and set a clear vision for your organization. Whether you’re the founder or owner of a company or hold a leadership role within your organization, establishing a clear vision significantly impacts your team’s success.
Why You Exist
A common challenge leaders face is communicating their vision, especially if they’re new to their role or lack a formal title. If you’re unclear about your vision, how can you expect your team to understand it? The first step is to reflect on why your organization exists.
When I visit various organizations and ask why the organization exits, I often receive vague responses centered around making money. While financial sustainability is important, there needs to be a deeper “why” behind your mission. For example, at Wheeler Coaching, we exist to empower people to lead better at work because we believe that great leadership transforms families and communities. This passion drives me every day, even on tough days.
Understanding the Problem
Once you’ve identified your organization’s purpose, the next piece of the puzzle is to clarify the specific problems you’re solving. Every organization is built around addressing a particular issue. If you’re part of a nonprofit, this is typically more apparent; for instance, the American Red Cross exists to provide life saving skills and resources. In a business context, think about the product or service you providing. Understanding the problem your organization resolves helps build a robust foundation for your vision.
Engage Key Influencers
As a leader, it’s imperative to involve your key team members in the vision-setting process. While the vision should ultimately come from you, it’s vital that your team—especially those with influence—also feel a part of it. Having open discussions about where you are going allows for the active involvement of those who can champion your vision throughout the organization. Their buy-in can significantly amplify commitment and motivation among team members.
Painting the Picture
Once you’ve defined the problem your organization exists to solve, it’s time to share the specifics of your vision with the rest of the team. Painting a vivid picture of where the organization stands today, where it wants to be, and how to get there is crucial. This idea became especially clear during the pandemic when many organizations struggled without a clear vision.
When discussing your vision, consider this structure: outline where you were, where you are now, and where you intend to go. This framework not only clarifies direction but also helps team members see their role in the journey.
Which area could you improve this week to provide clarity for your team? A clear vision not only empowers your organization but also accelerates the journey to your goals.
