Setting Vision as a Leader
November 2, 2025Tug-O-War in Leadership
Have you ever played a game of tug of war? It’s quite the spectacle—two teams pulling against each other, each trying to avoid getting stuck in the mud in the middle. Occasionally, that’s exactly what leadership can feel like. You find yourself caught between the aspirations of your team and the overarching goals of your organization. So how do we find the balance?
First off, let’s acknowledge the unmet needs of your team can impede progress. When team members pull you in one direction while organizational objectives tug in another, nobody wins. The goal of any effective leader should be to shift from that tug of war mentality to a more balanced and enjoyable collaboration—think of it like a teeter-totter. It’s about equilibrium; how can we adjust those individual needs while still moving the team toward its destination?
Understanding What Your Team Wants
As a leader, the first step is understanding what your team members truly want. This isn’t just a checklist—it’s about digging deeper to understand their motivations. Here are some common desires that might emerge:
– Fair Compensation: Financial satisfaction can significantly affect morale. If employees feel they’re not compensated fairly for their work, it’s crucial to address that.
– Work-Life Balance: In our fast-paced world, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is becoming increasingly important. How flexible can your organization be in addressing this need?
– Growth Opportunities: Employees often crave personal and professional development. Consider implementing training sessions, offering mentorship, or encouraging skill enhancement.
– Clarity of Expectations: Many have experienced the frustration of working without a clear direction. Clear expectations reduce miscommunication and improve efficiency.
– Purpose: According to Daniel Pink’s book, Drive, one of the most significant motivators is having a sense of purpose. Ensuring your team understands how their work contributes to larger goals can make a world of difference.
Discovering Their “Why”
After identifying what your team wants, the next step is to uncover their “why.” As a leader, you likely have your own vision for why the organization exists. But aligning that with your team’s understanding of their personal “why” is where the magic happens.
Imagine this: on one side, you have your organization’s goals—serving a need in the community, achieving specific financial outcomes, or fulfilling a mission statement. On the other, you have the individual “whys” of your team members. Your job is to bridge that gap and align both sets of motivations.
When both whys intersect, you create an inspiring environment that fosters growth, motivation, and satisfaction. An aligned team is more engaged, and as a result, the organization moves closer to its goals faster.
Communicate the “Why”
It’s vital that your team understands not just the “what” of organizational goals but also the “why” behind them. Sharing this deeper context helps everyone see the bigger picture, enhancing their connection to the mission. Leadership isn’t just about setting objectives; it’s about communicating their importance and how they relate to your team’s desires.
