Leading by Example
October 6, 2025Navigating Change
In today’s fast-paced world, change has become the norm rather than the exception. As leaders, our ability to effectively navigate this change is crucial—not just for our teams but for the overall success of our organizations. Below are some keys based on change management expert John Kotter and leadership expert John Maxwell.
Before going any further, let’s explore why effective change leadership so vital. Without a well-structured approach, change can lead to chaos and confusion. Abrupt changes might feel like progress, but they often create more problems than they solve. As leaders, we must be strategic about how we initiate change to foster a positive and productive environment.
Develop a Plan
Change should never be random or aimless. The first step is to develop a clear plan that details what you want to change and why it matters. For instance, if you’re looking to alter a process within your team, take a moment to articulate the goals behind this change. What improvements are you aiming for? A well-thought-out plan communicates to your team that you’ve conducted your due diligence and thoughtfully considered the implications of change.
Engage Key Influencers
Once you have your plan in place, focus on gathering support from both formal and informal leaders within your organization. While it’s essential to secure buy-in from those in formal leadership positions, don’t overlook the influence of other team members who can sway morale and acceptance. These informal leaders often set the tone within a team, much like “locker room leaders” in sports, making them crucial allies in promoting and sustaining change.
Allow Time for Acceptance
Change can be difficult, and it’s important to recognize that your team may need time to come to terms with new initiatives. The sudden changes of 2020 serve as a stark reminder of how unexpected change can create turmoil. Where possible, provide your team with adequate notice and space to process upcoming changes. Create open forums, like town halls to encourage discussion and allow team members to voice their concerns.
Anticipate Challenges
Expect problems to arise during any change process. By preparing for potential setbacks, you can mitigate their impact when they occur. Pausing to assess possible concerns will equip you to handle unexpected challenges head-on. Use any obstacles as learning opportunities—embrace them with a mindset that says, “I didn’t expect that,” and keep moving forward.
Celebrate Milestones
Amidst the hustle of driving change, it can be easy to overlook achievements along the way. Celebrating small victories—like reaching a key milestone—can help maintain momentum and boost team morale. Just as a sports team celebrates its first win, acknowledging progress throughout the change process keeps everyone motivated and engaged.
Be Ready to Adjust
Finally, adaptability is crucial. No plan is perfect, and circumstances can shift dramatically—sometimes unexpectedly. Whether it’s losing a key team member or facing resource constraints, being adaptable while staying true to your ultimate vision is vital. Focus on the purpose rather than the plan and be willing to adjust your strategy as necessary.
What is a specific change you want to implement within your organization? Work through this process to frame your approach, and then take action.
