Discovering Your Leadership Style
September 14, 2025Three Leadership Pitfalls to Avoid
Leadership has many challenges and is incredibly rewarding. One misstep can derail the vision and goals of an organization or team. Although there are many pitfalls, I will only address three common traps leaders encounter. Acknowledging and addressing these pitfalls is essential for steering your team toward success.
Micromanaging
Micromanagement is one of the most prevalent issues in leadership. Many of us have experienced it firsthand—a leader who not only tells their team what to do but also how to do it, peering over shoulders to monitor every move. It stifles creativity and undermines confidence. As leaders, we must realize that perfection doesn’t require every task to be done 100% our way.
Instead of hovering, encourage your team members to take ownership of their work. Accept that if someone completes a task to 80% of your standards, it might still yield the desired outcome. Give them the autonomy to find their methods, step back, and trust that they can deliver results, unless there are significant safety or compliance concerns that require strict adherence.
Lack of Clarity
Another significant pitfall is a lack of clarity or vision. The saying “without vision, the people will perish” encapsulates this idea. If leadership is vague about goals or expectations, employees will likely struggle even more to grasp the vision as it trickles down through the organization.
To combat this issue, leaders should take the time to reflect on their vision. Engage in conversations with other visionary thinkers to broaden your perspective. Spend time reading and exploring new ideas can stimulate your creativity and provide clarity on your objectives. When leaders are clear about their vision, they create a roadmap others can follow, reducing confusion and aligning efforts toward a common goal.
Avoiding Conflict
Conflict for some is easy, but for many they would rather avoid it. While many people dislike confrontation, it’s important for leaders to face issues head-on. Avoiding necessary discussions can lead to unresolved problems that hinder team progress. Imagine a sports coach who never addresses a player’s poor performance; that player would never improve, and the entire team would suffer as a result.
Having difficult conversations may be uncomfortable, but it also shows that you care about your team’s growth. Just like parents must sometimes discipline their children to foster maturity, leaders too must engage in tough dialogues to encourage development within their teams.
Establishing clarity before conflicts arise can make these conversations less personal. When expectations and goals are well-defined, leaders can approach team members with specific feedback rather than vague criticisms. This focused approach encourages collaboration and enhances performance.
Do you see yourself slipping into one of these pitfalls? Do you need to relinquish control and trust your team more? Is it time to clarify your vision? Or perhaps, you need to have a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding. Whatever it may be, take a step this week to cultivate your leadership skills. Need help thinking into your leadership?
