Three Leadership Pitfalls to Avoid
September 8, 2025Cultivating Innovation As A Leader
In a world that changes at lightning speed, it’s imperative that leaders cultivate innovative teams. Just recently, while preparing a video on this topic, I had to update my technology—proof that even the tools we use are in constant flux. To thrive in this fast-paced environment, we must embrace innovation, even when it feels uncomfortable.
The Importance of Innovation
Why should we focus on innovation? The answer is simple: it leads to growth. A creative work environment keeps team members engaged and motivated. When people feel inspired, they become more enthusiastic about their work, resulting in improved outcomes for both individuals and the organization.
But before we delve into practical strategies, let’s clarify two key terms: innovation and invention. Innovation involves enhancing existing products, services, or processes, while invention is the act of creating something entirely new. In this context, we will focus on innovation—specifically, how to elevate what already exists.
Create Space for Ideas
One of the first steps in encouraging innovation is to create space for your team to brainstorm and explore solutions. Companies like Google have famously implemented “innovation time,” allowing employees to dedicate a portion of their work hours to think creatively and bring forth new ideas. This practice has led to some of the most groundbreaking resources and products available today.
When leaders provide time and space for creative thinking, it fosters an environment where ideas can flourish. Encourage your team to identify challenges and develop potential solutions without the pressure of immediate results.
Establish a Safe Environment
Another necessary component for fostering innovation is creating a safe space where team members feel free to express themselves. As Ed Catmull, former president of Pixar, put it: “Always take a chance on better, even if it seems threatening.” It’s vital for your team to know that taking risks is a fundamental aspect of the innovative process. Failure should not be stigmatized but seen as an opportunity to learn and grow.
While some structure is necessary, ensure that your team understands that stepping outside the traditional framework is acceptable. When people feel secure in sharing unconventional ideas, innovation can truly thrive.
Model Risk-Taking as a Leader
As a leader, your behavior sets the tone for your team. To encourage innovation, you must model risk-taking. Share your own experiences of trying new things, even when they come with uncertainty. Acknowledge that not every initiative will succeed, but each attempt provides valuable lessons.
This vulnerability encourages your team to step out of their comfort zones and experiment. When you demonstrate that risks are part of the process, you create a culture where innovation is not only accepted but celebrated.
Embrace Uncertainty
For many leaders, the idea of relinquishing control can be daunting. However, it’s essential to recognize that complete control is an illusion. The unpredictable nature of life—in particular, the events of 2020—has shown us that adaptability is key. By fostering a team environment primed for innovation, you prepare your team to respond effectively to disruptions and challenges.
Now that you have some strategies to encourage innovation, it’s time to evaluate where you can improve. Do you need to create more space for thinking? Establish better safety for your team’s ideas? Or perhaps you need to model risk-taking more effectively? Whatever it may be, take action this week to develop an innovative team culture.
