Prioritizing for Success
January 6, 2025Prioritizing for Success - Macro Priorities
In my last post, I shared about the three types of priorities to help us be successful. If you did not get the overview then you can go here. In this post let’s unpack how to determine your macro priorities.
Whether looking at this from a personal or professional perspective, the clearer we are on the following three areas the better we will be able to prioritize.Mission
This word gets confusing so let me clarify by calling this our purpose. This is the why behind what we do. Imagine being lost at sea in the dark. Maybe you feel that way professionally or personally. A lighthouse will help you find your way back home.
That is what your purpose is. In order to find it you need to understand why you do what you do. If you lead a team, why do you do what you do other than make money or some type of numerical success? The answer to this question will serve as your lighthouse when you have days you want to quit. (We all do!)Vision
You are out on a giant body of water and cannot see where you are going. The question is, do you know where you want to go? This is vision. It has been said that without vision, people perish. Without an idea of where you are going, you will wander aimlessly at sea.
The person at sea determines if they want to go North, South, East, West, or some variation of the four. As a leader, you determine what you are trying to accomplish. Where are you leading your team? What are you trying to accomplish in the next year, three years, etc. Take time to get clear on where you are leading your team or family, and that will help you see if your compass is pointing in the right direction.Values
I would suggest this is the most important of the three macro priorities. This is what influences the decisions we make. This informs how we treat the people on our team. If you are lost at sea and value your people, you will make sure to do whatever you can to feed them. On the other hand, if you see people as just weight holding you down, you may make other decisions.
I don’t have the time to walk you through an activity I do with individuals and groups to help provide clarity on this. What you can do is take some time to reflect and think what your top three to five values are. Think about how you treat others and the values that impact your behavior.
