December 9, 2024Stress Solutions - 5 Holiday Stress Tips
This time of year can be stressful. Family pressure, expectations about the holidays from every angle, and year end pressures professionally. During the holiday season you may feel increased pressure to deliver results while juggling personal commitments and many holiday obligations.
This can be overwhelming and stressful. To help you manage stress during this time here are five facts to know and tips to consider.
Stress can negatively impact productivity and decision-making
When you’re feeling stressed, your ability to focus and make sound decisions can be compromised. If you are like me as stress increases, clarity of thought decreases. This can have a significant impact on your productivity and the overall performance of your team. Take a moment to pause and clarify what is creating the stress. Try writing the list of items creating stress to clear your mind and create space for making better decisions.
Prioritizing self-care is essential for effective leadership
As a leader, it’s important to lead by example. By prioritizing self-care and managing your own stress levels, you set a positive example for your team. Some ways to demonstrate self-care could be creating an environment at work where you take social breaks, leaving early as the priority work is done and allowing the team to do the same, or create fun accountability around health habits such as nutrition and exercise.
Communication is key to managing expectations
During the holidays, it’s crucial to communicate effectively with your team and stakeholders. Managing expectations and setting realistic goals can help alleviate stress and prevent misunderstandings. Have open and honest conversations about workload and expectations. This ensures everyone is on the same page and has the right focus as the year winds down.
Flexibility is key to maintaining work-life balance
We have all had unexpected events land on our calendar during this season. As a leader, it’s important to foster a culture of flexibility that allows your team to manage personal obligations while still meeting work demands. Leading with flexibility and understanding helps your team maintain a healthy work-life balance, reducing stress and fostering a more positive work environment. Set clear outcomes you want accomplished during this stressful time and allow your team flexibility in how they reach it.
Time off is essential for recharging
Finally, it’s important to recognize the value of taking time off to recharge during the holidays. Encouraging your team to take time off to rest and rejuvenate can lead to increased productivity and a more positive work culture. As a leader, it’s important to set an example by taking time off yourself and encouraging your team to do the same.
