Leading Generationally – Millennials
November 4, 2024Leading Generationally - Gen X
In the workplace today four generations interact together to accomplish work. This can create challenges for leaders because each generation is different in how they desire to be led. Some of these principles span across generations but may be embraced more easily from those in Generation X (born 1965 – 1980).
Gen X is
the last generation that remembers a life without the internet. This generation is also a generation that
experienced a time of great social turmoil during their early years. Both technological and social experiences
impact how we want to be led.
Authenticity
This
generation was raised with events such as Watergate and the Iran-Contra
scandal, along with an early life during a time of great social
upheaval. Because of these factors Gen X
value authenticity. As a leader be aware
of whether you are hiding a secret agenda.
Be appropriately candid with situations and circumstances and you will
garner greater respect from this generation.
Gen X
would rather have you communicate in an honest and direct way. Take the time to build a genuine relationship
with them, letting them know you value them as a person, not just for what they
do.
Autonomy
Gen X
has also been known as the latchkey generation because of the increase in
divorce rates as they grew up. This
factor enabled them to learn early on how to do many things independently. As a leader, give team members in this generation the
freedom to develop their individual approach to working on a problem.
Entrust
them with responsibility and clear expectations then let them do the work. This generation values both clear direction
and the freedom to use their skills and complete the work without the leader
hovering over them. Creating this
environment will help you lead them and others on your team effectively.
Embrace Leading
Right
now this is the generation that is assuming many leadership roles. Embrace that responsibility with humility and
excitement. As a Gen X leader, you can
model leadership with high integrity and consistency. You can be the authentic leader you may not have
experienced growing up. Now is your time
to be the influence you want to be in the world. Leverage your authenticity and autonomy to
become a productive, positive force of leadership for good.
Which of
these three areas will you grow in to either lead Gen X more effectively or be
a model of servant leadership for the next generation? Need help thinking into your leadership? Contact
