September 16, 2024Keys to Communication IV - Four Styles
Have you ever been in a situation where you don’t feel like you are connecting with someone? You are trying to talk to them, but something feels off. You don’t understand them and they are not making sense to you or even annoying you.
This is not abnormal. I often provide workshops for organizations and teams to help them understand how to connect more effectively with those they work with. We are all different, but we are predictably different.
I don’t have the time to dive into the differences in detail here, but I will provide some highlights. Look at these four styles and use this basic understanding to improve your ability to communicate in a way that connects with others.
Dominant
Do you know a person who likes to be in charge? Maybe they are the first person to provide direction to a group or try to take the group over. This is the person who is comfortable being in front and in charge. This person may tend to be direct and blunt in how he or she communicates.
How do we connect with them? There are many ways, but the best tip I can provide is to be bright, be brief, and be gone. They don’t want all the details just the bottom line. Speak to results and you will connect with them.
Influencer
No, I’m not talking about the internet type. This is the person you know who is fun, full of energy, very likable, and brings life and energy to any room. The driver is comfortable being in front . . . to drive results while the influencer enjoys the recognition from being in front. This person really appreciates rewards and recognition.
How do we connect with them? Take time to listen to them and their ideas. This may require patience for you depending on your style. When you take the time to listen though, they will feel valued and appreciated. This will build a stronger connection.
Steady
Around 69% of the people you encounter will fall into this category. These individuals are more reserved, but they are the glue to your organization or team. They are great team players and are extremely reliable.
How do we connect with them? If you move fast, slow down. Relax and soften how you speak with them. They will appreciate you taking the time to connect with them individually. When you have a change, give them a warning because sudden change may create resistance. Make them feel safe and secure, and you will connect with them.
Compliant
These individuals are not doormats, actually they can be quite the opposite at times. Maybe you know an individual who asks lots of questions and likes everything perfect. They may be a compliant style. This individual wants to do things right and is also reserved.
How do we connect with them? Again, slow down. Also, give them time to answer their questions and provide the details. This individual wants to do things right so the clearer your expectations, the better. Clarity will connect with this individual.
We just scratched the surface of the four different communication styles but provided a foundation for you. The most important key is to adjust our style to connect with them. Speak in a way they can hear you.
